Reason: When you let your presence be known to other drivers, you decrease your chance of a head- on collision. Other drivers can see you at 4,000 feet when you drive with your low beams on. This means that they can see you early enough in advance to make necessary adjustments to avoid a collision. 13. Q. What can a driver do to avoid a collision at night? A. Don't drive when you are tired, and try not to drive around the time you normally go to bed. Reason: Visibility is reduced at night. A driver should compensate by increasing following distance as well as stopping distance. Remember when your body gets tired, your reflexes are slower than they normally are. 14. Q. How often should a driver check the mirrors? A. Several times per minute. Reason: By checking your mirrors several times per minute, you will minimize or reduce the chances of a car crash by being alert to the movement of other vehicles around you. 15. Q. Is talking on the cell phone while driving hazardous? A. Very much so. Reason: Doing anything that causes you to drive with only one hand (eating, drinking, changing radio stations or CDs, etc.) is very hazardous, particularly using a cell phone. Even a hands-free phone can cause problems because it divides your attention between your conversation and what is happening on the road. Driving REQUIRES YOUR UTMOST ATTENTION!!! Remember, accidents happen in a fraction of a second. 16. Q. Why are good tires so important? A. They can save your life. Reason: Tires are one of the most neglected parts of an automobile. Good tires will enable you to come to a stop in a shorter distance by gripping the road. Other advantages are: when properly inflated, good tires will provide you with a more comfortable ride, will save you gas and will reduce your chance of hydroplaning. 17. Q. Why is important not to go over the speed limit even a little? A. Speed limit signs represent the maximum speed for ideal driving conditions, and IT IS THE LAW. Reason: Driving above the speed limit will increase your chance of a car crash. When you drive faster you (1) increase your stopping distance, (2) will have more difficulty maneuvering to avoid a crash, and (3) it limits your reaction time. Keep in mind that if you double your speed you need to increase your stopping distance by four times. SPEED KILLS! DON'T SPEED!
